Kev Mud performs both stand-up and spoken word. “Both are funny but one rhymes more than the other does,” he says. His experiences of homelessness, addiction and suicide have shaped his work and he hasn’t shied away from his past experiences. As he says: “when they didn’t work I started writing poems… then comedy… now I’m a full-time stand-up who lives on-site in a caravan on the cliffs of North Cornwall.”
This year he’s back performing at his third Glastonbury Festival and he took time out of his preparations to tell us more.
Q&A with Kev Mud
How did you get into live performance?
I had to stop drinking… my doctor told me to write instead. I wrote poems.. stupid ones about things like my nan being in the CIA. I rang her and told her I’d written that and she said “but I wasn’t in the CIA”… I said “that’s what you would say though isn’t it?” People laughed at the stuff in between.
A month later I went to a comedy night in Newquay called Ansum Comedy. An act didn’t turn up and I got pressured to go up, which I did.
Only a few months later I was in the final of British Comedian Of The Year at The Comedy Store, which felt poetic as I used to be homeless in Covent Garden around the corner, and get shouted at for begging in the queue for The Store only a few months earlier.
What’s it like to be performing at this year’s Glastonbury Festival?
It’s fun. I’ve only been going 3 years and this is my 3rd Glastonbury performing, but it’s by far my biggest stage. Considering where I’ve come from, I already feel like I’ve won, so I don’t get any of the pressure or worry.
What can you tell us about your plans for the shows?
I’m going to make people laugh. If they don’t like my stuff they can walk off. I’m not going to appease the majority… I’ll stick to what I like, and see who chimes with it.
How do you approach performing at a festival like this?
No different to any other gig for me apart from the logistics… I’ve done a lot of large venues before holding thousands of people, so I’m used to it.
Will you be checking out any other acts across the weekend?
Yeah. I never plan it. I just go anywhere. Spencer Jones will be class. He always is.
